CANNES FILM FESTIVAL : THE HISTORY
The Cannes Film Festival has its origin in 1938 when Jean Zay, the French Minister of National Education, with inspiration from other noteworthy personalities, decided to set up an international cinematographic festival. Its creation can be largely attributed to the French desire to compete with The Venice Film Festival held in Venice, which at that time was the only international film festival. However, it was pretty partial owing to its Fascist bias during those years. In the year 1938, the French, British and American jury members decided to permanently withdraw from the Venice Film Festival owing to one such incident of outrageous partiality.
This encouraged the French to found a free festival and on May 31,1939, the city of Cannes was finally selected as the location of the same. Thus was born the Cannes Film Festival with its official birthname of Le Festival International Du Film.
After being cancelled for a few years for the Second World War, the festival was relaunched in 1946 and twenty one countries presented their films at the First Cannes Film Festival. In 1983, a new and much bigger Palais Des Festivals at Des Congres was built to host the festival.
