Tariff Drama or a national emergency

we can call it a Tariff Drama or is it heading towards a Trade War .Pending the easing of the crisis, President Donald J. Trump is applying a 25% surcharge tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% surcharge tariff on imports from China. Energy products from Canada will receive a reduced 10% tariff.
President Trump is acting decisively to make Mexico, Canada, and China fulfill their commitments of ending illegal immigration and preventing toxic fentanyl and other drugs from entering our nation.
The orders clearly state that the trafficking of contraband drugs such as fentanyl into the United States, via illicit distribution channels, has resulted in a national emergency, including a public health emergency. Chinese authorities have not taken the steps necessary to cut off the supply of precursor chemicals to known criminal cartels and close money laundering by transnational criminal organizations.
Furthermore, the Mexican drug cartels have a deplorable relationship with the Mexican government. The Mexican government has provided havens for the cartels to produce and transport harmful narcotics, which in total have caused hundreds of thousands of American victims to die from overdoses. This relationship threatens the national security of the United States, and we need to eliminate the power of these harmful cartels.
There is also an increasing presence of Mexican cartels with fentanyl and nitazene synthesis facilities in Canada. A recent study acknowledged Canada’s increased domestic production of fentanyl, and its increasing presence in global narcotics distribution.
LEVERAGING OUR STRENGTH TO PROTECT AMERICANS’ SAFETY: Past Administrations did not use fully the economic standing of America as leverage to secure the borders of the country against unauthorized migration and prevent the fentanyl scourge, instead allowing problems to simmer.

Although trade represents 67% of Canada’s GDP, 73% of Mexico’s GDP, and 37% of China’s GDP, it represents only 24% of U.S. GDP. In 2023, however, the U.S. trade deficit in goods was the world’s largest at more than $1 trillion.
Tariffs are an effective, tested means of leverage to safeguard the national interest. President Trump is making full use of available tools and acting firmly to put the safety of Americans and our national security above all else.
While past Administrations have been unsuccessful in capitalizing on America’s exceptional strength combined with the unique position that America holds as a world trading partner to serve the security goals of the American people, President Trump has not.

The Biden Administration’s policies have fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history.
Over 10 million illegal aliens tried to cross into the United States under Biden’s stewardship, including an increasing number of Chinese nationals and terrorists on the terror watchlist.
The issue is not limited to the southern border – northern border encounters with Canada are increasing too.

Gang members, runners, human smugglers, and illegal drugs and narcotics of every description are flowing across our borders and into our neighborhoods.
In the last fiscal year, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted over 21,000 pounds of fentanyl on our borders, enough to kill over 4 billion people.
Federal authorities are estimated to seize only a small percentage of the fentanyl smuggled on the southern border.
These medications kill tens of thousands of Americans yearly, with 75,000 fatalities annually caused by fentanyl alone.
There are more Americans being killed by fentanyl overdoses every year than the total number of American lives lost during the entire Vietnam War.
BUILDING ON PAST SUCCESS: President Trump continues to show his commitment to making sure U.S. trade policy benefits the national interest. Is it a Tariff drama or trade war.

As President Trump stated in the Presidential Memorandum on American First Trade Policy, trade policy is an important element in national security.
President Trump vowed last November to “sign all appropriate documents to impose a 25% Tariff on ALL of the products being imported into the United States from Mexico and Canada, and its absurd Open Borders. This Tariff will stay in place until such time as Drugs, and especially Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens cease this Invasion of our Nation!”
In his initial term as President of the United States, President Trump created the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis and issued a proclamation declaring the Opioid Crisis a public health emergency.
President Trump’s history of placing America first in trade dates back a long way. During his initial term, President Trump effectively employed threats of tariffs against Mexico to achieve the security of our border.
When our national security was under attack from a worldwide excess of steel and aluminum, President Trump moved quickly to defend America’s national security by imposing tariffs on the importation of these products.
In response to China’s theft of intellectual property, forced technology transfer, and other unreasonable actions, President Trump moved with resolve to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, leveraging that to secure a historic bilateral economic deal.
Only last week, President Trump used tariffs to effectively address national security issues with Colombia, promptly securing a resolution that puts first the safety and security of the American people and the integrity of our national borders.
