Nearly 500 people died from the heat in Canada, along with approximately 1billion marine animals that also lost their lives in the heat wave. The Climate change in Canada is a matter of grave concern and if it is not addressed, the effects will be much more than just searing temperatures.

Residents of Canada experienced record-breaking heat waves with raging wild fire as well as heavy flooding in some places in 2021. 2022 kick started with extreme cold, snow and high winds. Yhe city of Toronto issued an extreme cold weather alert due to freezing temperatures. On January 17th, a blizzard hit parts of Ontario, including Toronto, bringing down the mercury to as low as -40°C. Large areas of Southern Ontario received 35-55 cm of snow, with snow accumulation of upto 50cm.

The effects of Global warming on Canada’s environment include more extreme weather. All in all, the region will experience more storm events, increasing storm intensity, rising sea levels, storm surges, coastal erosion and flooding from a warming in global temperatures. Some of the conspicuous impacts of Canada climate change are –

Firstly , Hotter temperature could mean more heat waves . Hence a higher risk of wild fires and draughts in some parts of the country.

Secondly , Oceans are expected to become more acidic and less oxygenate, which could harm marine life.

Thirdly , Parts of Canada’s Arctic Ocean are projected to have extensive ice-free periods during summer, within a few decades.

And finally , rise in sea levels could also increase the risk of coastal flooding . However more intense rainfall could cause problems of flooding in urban centres.

CONCLUSION

According to a research, Canada’s economy could shrink by 6.9% annually by 2050 without proper climate action. Not only Canada, people all across the globe will suffer economic blow if they do not take immediate action. Climate change facts show that the last decade was the hottest in 1,25,000 years . Carbon di Oxide in the air is at its highest in 2 million years . However we are losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice each year. So as global citizen, it is high time that we become conscious and religiously try to lessen the Global Warming.
