IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON OUR CULTURE: IT HAS ITS PROS AND CONS

Social media has emerged as an important and effective means of supporting and promoting activities and interactions among peers, consumers, and organizations; transcending the boundaries of time and space. In the globalization era, social media has become extremely popular with its user-friendly and effective functions. Owing to its far-reaching effect, it has improved creativity and social awareness by fostering interaction with other people and sharing new ideas and opinions. Moreover, social media can enhance the intercultural adaptation level of people, who use it to become more adaptable to the new cultures of the host countries and to stay connected with the cultural aspects of their home countries. However, there are negative impacts, too. A large number of youngsters and children, whose interaction on social platforms are definitely more, often tend to mix the reel and the real. They are kind of growing up in a virtual world.  Thus the impact of social media on the cultural side of our life is deep and it has both it’s good and bad.

THE POSITIVE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON CULTURE :

Of late, social media has become a part  and parcel of our daily life. It supports the people all across the globe in communicating, meeting new people, socialising, sharing knowledge, sharing creative interests,  learning different experiences and so on.
According to many researchers, the positive impact of social media, on every aspect, outweigh the negative impacts. Most important thing that social media does is, it connects you with a large number of people. People from all community, from all age group and literally from every corner of the world can connect with you. That is itself a huge platform. This platform helps one to know and respect the culture of another. You can share your write ups, drawings, images, poems, performances, ideas and everything with all the people with whom you are connected. Thus it is no wonder, that social platforms these days help in the finding of new talents. Moreover, for struggling artists or people with hidden talents, this becomes a stage to manifest one’s creative flair. Another important aspect that has a deep socio cultural impact is that, it helps in fostering empathy. As you are discussing different topics on social networking sites you are basically sharing your life along with its ups and downs, twists and turns and everything. While doing so, you may often find other persons who empathise with you. You may even find a friend, who has  already gone through the same ordeals and can help you. Moreover, in crucial situations like this,  when the Pandemic Covid 19 has absolutely disrupted normal life, these social networking sites have become the main platform to showcase creativity.  Singers, dancers, elocutionists and others associated with performing arts are widely using this platform to connect with their audience. Thus, cultural impact of social media, more specifically its positive influence, is deep, far reaching and strong.

THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON CULTURE :

Irrespective of the several positive aspects of social media, it has influenced our culture in negative ways, too. People are free to share whatever they want on social media and some pictures and write-ups may be inappropriate. People nowadays have become quite intolerant and often there are nasty comments regarding another person’s perspective on politics, religion, social rights, and culture. Moreover, social networking sites have made people more dependant on virtual friends and relationships than on real ones. People prefer to sit all day with a phone or computer and chat. Another disadvantage is that often mediocrity gets applauded while truly talented individuals do not get proper recognition. What makes social media ugly is that there are tons of unnecessary information shared by people and often there is fake news flooding the market. People can make brutal and negative comments about anything or anyone and those cause adverse social impact.
