WHAT IS SOCIAL WORK?

To define Social work, it is a practice-based profession that promotes social change, development, cohesion and the empowerment of people and communities. Social work practice involves the understanding of human development, behavior and social, economic and cultural institutions and interactions. Social workers work with individuals and families to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may be helping to protect vulnerable people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they may require. SOCIAL WORK MONTH

In 1984, the White House officially recognised March as the National Social Work Month in the United States. Since then March is designated as the Social Work month and it is observed all throughout the country to uplift the social workers and celebrate their constant contributions to our society. These professionals use psychology and sociology to solve social issues and improve individual lives and it is not an easy feat to achieve.

PURPOSE OF SOCIAL WORK

Social work is the helping profession. The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet basic and complex needs of all people, with a particular emphasis on those who are vulnerable, oppressed and living in poverty. Social workers help their clients to deal not only with how they feel about a situation but also what they can do about it. In thousands of ways, social workers help people of every age and background, all across the globe. They help relieve people’s suffering, fight for social justice and improves lives and communication.

RESPONSIBILITY OF A SOCIAL WORKER 

The responsibility of a social worker involves a combination of research, professional interaction, solution development and maintenance of programs and services for vulnerable populations. A typical social worker’s responsibility includes the following duties :-

  • Firstly Identify the people and communities who are in need of help.
  • Secondly Assess client’s needs, situations, strengths and support networks to determine their goals.
  • Thirdly Help clients adjust to various changes and challenges in their lives like illness, divorce or unemployment.
  • Forthly Follow up the clients to ensure that their situations have improved.
  • Fifthly Develop and evaluate programs and services to ensure that the basic client needs are met.
  • Finally Provide psychotherapy services.

SOCIAL WORKER JOBS

Social worker role falls into a variety of categories and hence there are various types of social worker jobs. For instance Child and family , School , Mental health and Substance use , Gerontology ,  Ethnicity and Race and LGBTQ social workers.

CONCLUSION

Social work is an ever expanding field. Roles of a social worker have grown to include Crisis management as well as roles of empowerment and advocacy. Social workers can empower communities by encouraging individuals to take an active role . Active role in shaping social services, providing education programmes and enabling economic independence in the long term.
