INTRODUCTION

The Academy Awards, most popularly known as The Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical excellence in the Film Industry. Revered by people all across the globe. They are regarded by millions, as the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide.

ACADEMY AWARDS : SOME MORE DETAILS

The Oscars or Academy Awards are annual awards, given by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This is an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements and assessed by Academy’s voting members. The winners of various categories are awarded a copy of a Golden Statuette which is officially called the “Academy Award of Merit”, and unofficially called by its nickname the “Oscar”. Oscar awards are given in 24 categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress and so on.

HISTORY OF ACADEMY AWARDS : IN BRIEF

The first ever Academy Awards presentation was held on 16th May, 1929, at a private dinner function at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the audience consisted of a small congregation of 270 people. The post-awards  party was held at the Mayfair Hotel. Fifteen statuettes were awarded that night to honour the artists, directors and other members of the film industry. That was the beginning. At that time, winners were recognized for the entirety of their work done in a certain category . During the qualifying period. Thus, the First Best Actor Award was given to Emil Jannings for his performance in “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh”. With the fourth ceremony, the system changed and professionals were honoured for a specific performance in a single film. For the first six ceremonies, the eligibility spanned two calendar years.


IMPORTANCE OF WINNING AN OSCAR:

Aside from bestowing International recognition and prestige . Academy Award can play a crucial role in the consequent success of the major winners. The Best Picture Award, for example, can significantly increase the box office earnings of the winning film. Although For actors and directors, the award often results in higher pay packages . Increased media attention, enormous popularity and better film offers.

INDIA’S RENDEZVOUS WITH THE ACADEMY AWARD: 

In 1992, Film maker Satyajit Ray was bestowed with an Honorary Academy Award . The only Indian till date to receive the honour. However Resul Pookutty and A.R. Rahman won the award in Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Score . Academy Award categories, for 2008 British film Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman also shared the Best Original Song Award with Lyricist Gulzar for the song “Jai Ho” . The only Indian to win more than one Academy Award. Bhanu Athiya, a popular Costume Designer won India’s foremost Oscar for the 1982 Historical drama, Gandhi. India’s rendezvous with Oscar started in 1957 . When Mehbbob Khan’s “Mother India” got Academy nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. After that, movies like “Lagaan” and “Salaam Bombay” were also nominated in the same category.

CONCLUSION:

The 94th Academy Awards Ceremony took place on 27th March 2022, with much glitz and glamour. Irrespective of so many other  awards all over the Globe, winning an Oscar bestows a different kind of honour. It is the highest validation, a seal of approval bestowed only the best in the entertainment business.
