Kolahal Theatre Workshop is a society formed to work with the backward and stigmatized sections of the society . We not only enable their return to the mainstream , but also help them to psychologically develop with the help of theater therapy . We are a non-profit organisation.
Round the year we organised performances of our plays at various theatre halls in Kolkata.
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE BOARD:
Kolahal Theater workshop is an initiative to spread awareness through theater and performing arts. This is the brainchild of our Founder President Nigel Akkara, and as a NGO, it strives to provide a creative platform to the people belonging to those sections of the society which are less experimented with and are somewhat stigmatized.
We, in Kolahal, strongly believe that every individual, notwithstanding his/her stigma deserves a fair chance to prove himself/herself. That one chance might prove to be a turning point in that person’s life. And with this view, we have staged several productions in the past three years, with the various stigmatized sections of the society like the members of the LGBTQ community, female sex workers of Kolkata and the drug addicts, till now. We have also organized the performance of quite a few awareness street dramas, undertaken several motivational and awareness campaigns and arranged for the rehabilitation programs for the participants as well as those sections of the society we have worked with.
Today, India is one of the leading counties in the world and the future looks promising, provided there is equal opportunity for all. It is time we shed our age-old inhibitions and adopt the motto of inclusion. In Kolahal, it is our mantra that everyone must be treated equally regardless of gender, colour, ethnicity, religion or disability; without any privilege, discrimination or bias. Our mission is to design the journey of the unwanted section of the society, back to the mainstream. We, in Kolahal, have been relentlessly working towards this goal for the past three years and will continue to do so, in the years to come. We are grateful to all those who have been supporting us in this endeavour.
Some dreams and some classical thoughts were created in one place, an organization, as well as a few people. All the ideas came together and said, “We are KOLAHAL”.Sound of social awareness. KOLAHAL turned from a pure performance-oriented theatre group to an organisation with a wide range of projects.
The intention of Kolahal theater workshop was to work with main streaming of people through art.
The first endeavor was with the Transgenders and people from the LGBT community . The name of the production was Bishakto Panchali . The first show was staged at the Tapan Theater on April 2018.
It was a very difficult time as the Hon’ble Supreme court of India was just about to pass the verdict on 377 IPC .The bench pronounced its verdict on 6 September 2018. Announcing the verdict, the court reversed its own 2013 judgement of restoring Section 377 by stating that using the section of the IPC to victimize homosexuals was unconstitutional, and henceforth, a criminal act.
