Sarojini Chattopadhyay was born on February 13, 1879, in Hyderabad. Her father Aghora Nath Chattopadhyay was a scientist and philosopher. He was the founder of Nizam College, Hyderabad. Sarojini Naidu’s mother’s name was Baroda Sundari Devi. And she was a poetess. She used to write poetry in Bengali. Being the eldest among eight siblings. Sarojini Naidu was a brilliant student. At the age of 12 only, she attained national fame. She topped the Matriculation Examination at Madras University.
She thus started writing poems in English. Impressed by her skill, the then Nizam of Hyderabad gave her the scholarship to study abroad. At the age of sixteen, she traveled to England to study first at King’s College London and later at Girton College, Cambridge. When she was 15 years old, she met Dr. Govindarajulu Naidu, a non-Brahmin doctor, and fell in love with him. She married him at the age of nineteen when inter-caste marriages were not in allowance. It was a revolutionary step but her father fully supported her.

Throughout her career, Sarojini Naidu worked for the dignity of the common man and the education and emancipation of women. She thus did this by actively encouraging the setting up of orphanages and schools for girls. Sarojini Naidu then joined the Indian National Movement in the wake of the partition of Bengal in 1905. She came in contact with stalwarts like Rabindranath Tagore, Annie Besant, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Gandhiji, and Jawaharlal Neheru.
After Indian Independence, Sarojini Naidu became the Governor of U.P. Besides her political career, she is one of the greatest Indo-Anglian poets. Eventually everyone appreciates her as a great lyricist. However her lyrics are melodious. Her poems are appreciated not only in India but all over the world. She was certainly a prolific poet whose volumes of poetry included The Golden Threshold (1965), The Bird Of Time ( 1912), and her collected poems, published under the title “Sceptred Flute” (1928) and The Feather of the Dawn (1961).
