GREEN DIWALI: CELEBRATING DIWALI
Introduction
Diwali or the Festival of Lights is just around the corner. However, the current scenario is not favourable for a proper Diwali celebration. For nearly two years now, the world has been reeling under the impact of the dreaded Pandemic Covid-19, which has affected millions of lives, all across the globe. As our country is also suffering from the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, which is a respiratory disease, a lot of states in the country have banned the use of firecrackers, urging the citizens to celebrate a “Green Diwali”. Green Diwali is a novel approach that is a way of celebrating the festival of lights, with minimum damage to the environment. The idea is to save the environment and Mother Earth, which provides us with all the natural resources.
HOW TO CELEBRATE GREEN DIWALI? :
GREEN DIWALI: CELEBRATING DIWALI in the green way .The bursting of firecrackers not only causes pollution but is also detrimental to the health of elderly people, children and animals. Crackers contain toxic compounds like Copper and Cadmium and due to change in the weather these particles get mixed up with the fog and become smog, causing Asthma attacks, Bronchitis, Headaches and so on. Let us take some basic steps to make this Diwali a green one.
• Use locally made earthenware diyas for decoration – Shun the use of plastic lights for home decorations and go for the handmade earthenware diyas. This will not only help the environment but will also help the poor artisan families.
• Stop burning firecrackers and start using Green crackers – Due to the bursting of crackers, a huge quantity of toxic gases get released into the atmosphere, which is one of the major health concerns for everyone in the world. Moreover, many firecrackers produce more than 65 decibels of noise. Thus firecrackers cause air pollution as well as noise pollution. So instead of burning regular firecrackers, go for Green crackers.
• Go for Organic Rangoli – Avoid the use of chemical-based Rangoli colours. On the contrary, make maximum use of natural colours and dyes like rice flour, turmeric powder, kumkum, petals, leaves and so on.
• Say “no” to plastic wrappers – In order to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali, say “no” to plastic wrappers for gifts and sweets. Instead of wrapping gifts in plastic packets, use bio-degradable bags which are completely compostable. Plastic wastes are non-bio-degradable and hence harmful to the environment.
GREEN CRACKERS AND SEED CRACKERS :
Green crackers are eco-friendly crackers and are safe for the environment. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research ( CSIR) labs have been successful in developing various environment-friendly fireworks. These fireworks, based on new formulations developed by CSIR, have been manufactured and are available in the Indian market.
Another new addition in this field is seed crackers. They are simply an alternative for firecrackers. A group of experts have developed an exact replica of firecrackers. These seed crackers burst into a plant. They are without any health hazards. Let us be responsible and use green crackers and seed crackers this Diwali.
